What is quick lime?
Quick lime is what is left when limestone (calcium carbonate) is heated in a kiln until it gives off carbon dioxide, a process called calcination. It reacts violently with water, CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂, and gives off a lot of heat as it does. Plants that dose it into water slake it first, and the slurry they get is the same calcium hydroxide sold as hydrated lime. A kilo of CaO does more neutralising than a kilo of Ca(OH)₂, because no water has been added yet. So steel works, flue gas plants, paper mills and large ETPs, which handle lime by the truckload, often choose quick lime over the hydrated form.
