What is ferric alum?
Ferric alum is the Indian trade name for aluminium sulphate that carries some iron. Outside India the same material is sold as aluminium sulphate or aluminum sulfate (CAS 10043-01-3). The aluminium does the work: dissolved in water, it forms aluminium hydroxide floc that traps suspended solids and colour and carries them down in the clarifier. Non-ferric alum is the iron-free grade. Ours comes as solid slabs of about 20 kg each, and it is highly soluble in water. In a dry store it keeps for about 12 months.
