What is hydrated lime?
Hydrated lime is quick lime (calcium oxide) that has been reacted with a controlled amount of water, a step called slaking. The product is calcium hydroxide, a strong alkali that dissolves only slightly in water, so plants dose it as a slurry, usually called milk of lime. In drinking water it raises pH and takes out carbonate hardness. In effluent it neutralises acid and turns dissolved heavy metals into hydroxides that settle with the sludge. Left open to air, it picks up moisture and carbon dioxide and slowly goes back to calcium carbonate, which does nothing for pH. That is why it has to be kept dry and sealed.
